An Import Export Code (IEC) is mandatory for any business that wants to import or export goods from India. Registration is done entirely online through the DGFT portal at a one-time fee of Rs 500. Processing takes 1-2 working days with correct documents. The IEC is a 10-digit code (same as your PAN) with lifetime validity and no renewal required. You must update your IEC annually between April and June on the DGFT portal to keep it active.
What Is an IEC and Why Do You Need It?
The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit registration number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a body under India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry. No person or entity can import or export goods from India without an IEC, with a handful of narrow exceptions for personal goods, government departments, and low-value border trade.
Your IEC is required at every step of the trade cycle. Customs won't clear your shipment without it. Banks need it to process foreign exchange transactions under FEMA. Shipping lines need it for the bill of lading. Export promotion councils need it for RCMC registration. Government schemes like RoDTEP need it to credit your duty remission. It is, quite literally, your licence to trade internationally.
Since 2014, your IEC number is the same as your PAN (Permanent Account Number). If your company PAN is AABCT1234A, that's also your IEC. This simplification makes the process faster, but you still need to apply through the DGFT portal to activate the PAN for trade purposes.
Who Needs an IEC (and Who Doesn't)?
Almost every business involved in cross-border goods trade needs an IEC. But there are specific exemptions defined under the Foreign Trade Policy. Here is the full picture:
| Entity / Situation | IEC Required? | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Private Limited Company exporting goods | Yes | Must register under company PAN |
| Proprietorship firm importing raw materials | Yes | Registered under proprietor's PAN |
| Partnership firm / LLP | Yes | Registered under firm PAN |
| Individual exporting personal goods | No | Exempted for personal use items below Rs 5 lakh |
| Government departments | No | Exempted for government imports/exports |
| Exports to Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan (up to Rs 25,000) | No | Exempted for small value border trade |
| Notified charitable organisations | No | Only for specified categories of goods |
| Service exporters (IT, consulting) | Recommended | Not legally required for services, but banks often ask for it |

If you export software, IT services, or consulting to international clients, you technically don't need an IEC for service exports. However, many banks will ask for one when processing inward remittances. It costs Rs 500 and takes a day — just get it to avoid hassles with your bank.
Documents Required for IEC Registration
The document list is short, but uploading incorrect or mismatched documents is the number one cause of delays and rejections. Gather everything before you start the online application.
| Document | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PAN card of the entity | PDF, < 5 MB | Company PAN for companies; individual PAN for proprietorships. Name must match the application exactly. |
| Aadhaar card of the applicant | PDF, < 5 MB | Director, partner, or proprietor. Used for e-verification via OTP. |
| Cancelled cheque or bank certificate | PDF, < 5 MB | Must show entity's current account number, IFSC code, and account holder name. |
| Address proof of registered office | PDF, < 5 MB | Utility bill (< 3 months old), rental agreement, or property tax receipt. |
| Certificate of Incorporation | PDF, < 5 MB | For companies and LLPs only. Not needed for proprietorships. |
| Partnership Deed | PDF, < 5 MB | For partnership firms only. |
| Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) | Class 2 or Class 3 | Of the authorised signatory. Alternatively, you can sign with Aadhaar OTP. |
| Passport-size photograph | JPEG, < 5 MB | Of the applicant (director/partner/proprietor). |

All documents must be uploaded as PDF files except the photograph (JPEG). Each file must be under 5 MB. The DGFT portal will reject oversized files without a clear error message — compress before uploading.
Step-by-Step Online Registration Process on DGFT
The entire process is online through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in). There is no physical office visit required. Here are the steps from start to finish:
Step 1: Register on the DGFT Portal
Go to dgft.gov.in and click "Register" in the top menu. Create an account using your email address and mobile number. You'll receive an OTP on your mobile to verify. Use an email address you check regularly — all communications from DGFT will come here.
Step 2: Navigate to IEC Application
After logging in, go to Services > IEC > Apply for IEC. The portal will ask you to link your PAN. Enter your entity PAN and verify it. If your PAN is already linked to an existing IEC, the system will show a message — this means you already have an IEC and just need to update it.
Step 3: Fill in Entity Details
Enter your business name (must match PAN card character-for-character), registered address, type of business entity, date of establishment, and nature of business. Select the ITC(HS) codes for the products you plan to trade. You can add more codes later if your product range expands.
Step 4: Add Director / Partner / Proprietor Details
Enter the personal details of all directors (for companies), partners (for firms), or the proprietor. You'll need their PAN, Aadhaar, and mobile numbers. Aadhaar OTP verification is required for each person listed.
Step 5: Enter Bank Account Details
Add your company's current account details — bank name, branch, account number, and IFSC code. Upload the cancelled cheque. This bank account will be used for all DGFT benefit disbursements. The account name must match the entity name on PAN — savings accounts are not accepted.
Step 6: Upload Documents and Sign
Upload all required documents as PDFs. Review every field carefully — errors here mean rejection and reapplication. Sign the application using either your Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar OTP. For companies, the DSC must belong to an authorised director.
Step 7: Pay the Fee and Submit
Pay the Rs 500 application fee via net banking, debit card, or credit card. After payment, submit the application. You'll receive an application reference number — save this for status tracking. Processing typically takes 1-2 working days when all documents are correct and complete.
Once approved, your IEC certificate is generated as a downloadable PDF from the DGFT portal. There is no physical certificate mailed to you — the electronic copy is the official document.

Common Mistakes That Delay Your IEC
1. PAN Name Mismatch
The most frequent rejection reason. The business name on the DGFT application must match the PAN card character-for-character, including punctuation and abbreviations. "ABC Pvt. Ltd." and "ABC Private Limited" will trigger a mismatch. Copy the name exactly as it appears on the PAN card.
2. Aadhaar OTP Failures
Ensure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is active and receiving SMS. If you've changed numbers, update your Aadhaar mobile linkage first (takes 2-3 days at an Aadhaar centre). The DGFT portal times out OTP verification after 10 minutes — keep your phone handy during application.
3. Savings Account Instead of Current Account
The bank account must be a current account in the entity's name. Savings accounts are not accepted for IEC registration. If you're a proprietor, open a current account in your trade name before applying.
4. Expired or Wrong-Class DSC
Your Digital Signature Certificate must be Class 2 or higher, must not be expired, and must be registered on the DGFT portal before use. If you face persistent DSC issues, switch to Aadhaar OTP signing — it's simpler and equally valid for this purpose.
5. Forgetting the Annual Update
Since 2022, DGFT requires all IEC holders to update their details annually between April and June. Navigate to Services > IEC > Update IEC. If you fail to update for two consecutive years, your IEC will be deactivated. Reactivation requires submitting the update with an explanation for the delay.
Validity, Amendments, and Deactivation
Your IEC has lifetime validity. There is no expiry date and no renewal fee. However, it can be deactivated if you fail to complete the annual update for two consecutive years, or if DGFT receives adverse information from customs or enforcement agencies.
If your business details change — new address, new directors, change in bank account, or change in entity structure — you must file an amendment on the DGFT portal within 90 days of the change. The amendment process is free and processes in 1-2 working days. Note that an IEC cannot be transferred from one entity to another; if you restructure your business, the new entity must apply for a fresh IEC under the new PAN.
Tips from Experienced Exporters
- Apply before you need it. Don't wait for your first export order. The IEC process takes 1-2 days but can stretch to a week during March-April fiscal year-end rush. Having it ready means you can respond to buyer enquiries immediately.
- Register on ICEGATE immediately after. The Indian Customs Electronic Gateway is where you file shipping bills, claim RoDTEP, and clear customs electronically. You need your IEC to register.
- Get your RCMC next. Your Registration Cum Membership Certificate from the relevant Export Promotion Council unlocks government incentives. IEC is a prerequisite.
- Open an EEFC account. An Exchange Earners' Foreign Currency account lets you hold a portion of export earnings in forex, avoiding conversion losses on future trade transactions.
- File a GST LUT. A Letter of Undertaking lets you export without paying IGST upfront, which is critical for working capital management.
- Set calendar reminders. Annual IEC update is between April and June. Mark it in your calendar. Deactivation for non-update is real and causes significant disruption.
Government fee: Rs 500 (one-time). If you hire a CA or customs agent to handle the application, expect Rs 1,500-5,000 on top. Total time: 20 minutes of your time to fill the form, 1-2 working days for DGFT processing.
What Comes After IEC?
Getting your IEC is the starting line, not the finish. Depending on your product category, you may need additional registrations. Agricultural exporters need APEDA registration. Food product exporters need FSSAI licensing. All goods exporters should register their AD Code with customs for foreign exchange processing.

The bottom line: the IEC is the single most important registration for any Indian business entering international trade. The process is straightforward, the fee is trivial, and most applications are approved within 24 hours. Get your documents in order, spend 20 minutes on the DGFT portal, pay Rs 500, and you'll have your IEC by tomorrow. Everything else builds on this foundation.
