Indicative estimate. CBAM has been live since 1 January 2026; actual obligations use verified emissions data (or official default values) and the prevailing EU ETS price at certificate surrender. Default intensities here are production-route ballparks, last reviewed June 2026 — override with your verified figure. Consult a CBAM declarant or customs advisor for compliance.
Why CBAM matters for Indian exporters now
CBAM puts a carbon price on imports of iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, and electricity into the EU. Your EU buyer pays it — by surrendering CBAM certificates priced off the EU Emissions Trading System — but the cost lands in your negotiation. In 2026 only 2.5% of embedded emissions are priced, which is why many exporters barely notice it yet. By 2030 it is nearly half; by 2034, all of it. A shipment that carries a few hundred euros of CBAM cost today carries forty times that within eight years.
The strategic lever is verified emissions data. CBAM lets importers use actual, verified embedded emissions instead of default values — so an Indian mill running electric-arc furnaces or a smelter on renewable power can hand its EU buyers a dramatically smaller carbon bill than the default assumes. That is a sales argument, not just a compliance task.
Combine your CBAM estimate with customs duty from the Tariff Calculator and freight from the Shipping Estimator for the full landed-cost picture your buyers see.
